Community Feedback: Site Options for the Potential New Blacksburg Recreation Facility

The Town of Blacksburg, in partnership with its consultants, is considering four potential locations for a new 65,000-square-foot indoor recreation facility. This is the first step in planning for a new facility. Please note that this facility is still several years off from being funded (5+ years, give or take) and will depend on many factors, including cost.

The proposed facility could include:

  • A gym with four (4) additional multipurpose courts
  • Expanded fitness and exercise studios
  • An indoor walking/running track
  • Additional community rooms for expanded programming
  • Increased equipment storage

Site Options:

  • Options 1 & 2: Located near the existing Community Center at 725 Patrick Henry Drive.
  • Options 3 & 4: Located on the site of the former Blacksburg High School, across Patrick Henry Drive.

Before beginning this survey:

  • Please take a moment to visit the main project page to review the background of this project
  • Then, review the four site options below and provide additional feedback or comments to help guide the Town’s site selection process.

Site Options

1 & 2: Located near the existing Community Center at 725 Patrick Henry Drive.

3 & 4: Located on the site of the former Blacksburg High School, across Patrick Henry Drive.

Option 1: Connects New Facility to the Existing Community Center

*This is a conceptual programming design of the potential building layout.

  • Creates a centralized hub for both recreation and community programming, with all staff in one location.
  • Preserves existing athletic fields and outdoor track across the street (note: upgrades or additions to these amenities are not part of this project but may be considered in the future).
  • Includes an open-air terrace for outdoor programming and events.
  • Limited visibility from the lobby to other program areas may affect user navigation

  • Centralized location for recreation programming; however, community programming and staff would be split between multiple sites.
  • Preserves existing athletic fields (note: upgrades or additions to these amenities are not part of this project but may be considered in the future).
  • Circulation between floors is less efficient due to the existing building layout.

  • Opportunity to create a longer outdoor walking/running trail around the site, connected to the indoor track.
  • Recreation and community programming, along with staff, would be split across multiple locations.
  • Includes an open-air terrace for outdoor programming and events.
  • Requires removal of the existing football/soccer field and outdoor track, though the softball field and practice field would remain.
