Phase 2 Improvements

In 2022, the Town of Blacksburg repaved Progress Street NW from North Main Street to Patrick Henry Drive, adding bicycle lanes and sharrows. In the second phase of this project, the Town is proposing improvements to the bicycle infrastructure network on this highly traveled route.

The Progress Street proposal includes replacing the sharrows with a bicycle lane on Progress Street NW from Broce Drive to Watson Avenue. To make these safety improvements, parking is proposed to be removed from the side of the street with odd addresses (from Broce Drive to Watson Avenue).

The plan to the left shows the proposed changes. A PDF version for easier viewing is available here. This version allows for manual zoom to see the plan in more detail.

Phase 1 Improvements - Completed in 2022

The Town recently repaved Progress Street from North Main Street to Patrick Henry Drive. This type of maintenance project can present an opportunity to improve safety for all modes. The Town is proposing to add bicycle infrastructure to this highly traveled route. The proposal includes a bicycle lane (on the side with even numbered addresses) and sharrows (on the side with odd addresses) from North Main Street to Broce Drive, and bicycle lanes on both sides from Broce Drive to Patrick Henry Drive. To make these safety improvements, parking is proposed to be removed from the side of the street with even addresses, from North Main Street to Patrick Henry Drive.

This project was identified in the 2015 Bicycle Master Plan and is supported by the 2021 Comprehensive Plan, both of which look for opportunities to improve infrastructure for bicyclists. The project helps separate people riding bicycles from faster-moving vehicular traffic, which can reduce conflicts and improve safety. Additionally, the removal of on-street parking spaces helps reduce conflicts with Blacksburg Transit at and around bus stops.
