Like most older Americans, you may be intending to live in your current home for as long as possible. Your decision to age in place (that is, remain in your current home or community as you age) may seem like an obvious and logical choice. After all, you have invested time and money into your home and have fond memories of the time you have spent there with family and friends. Home not only connects us to the people who are important to us but can also give us a sense of connection and belonging in our communities.
Deciding where and how to age in place requires more than just your intention. It should be part of a process that includes personal reflection, conversations with people important to you, intentional planning, and action.
The Town of Blacksburg, in collaboration with numerous partners on the New River Valley Aging in Community Leadership Team, has developed a suite of resources to help anyone, regardless of age, begin planning for successful aging. Key among these resources is the Aging In Place Workbook (updated in 2026), which is built around five key topics, which aging experts have identified as the critical factors that people should consider and plan for to successfully age in place. These include Housing, Health & Wellness, Transportation, Personal Finance, and Connection & Growth.
While the workbook is a resource that anyone can use on their own, or informally with a small group, the Blacksburg Branch of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library and VT Lifelong Learning Institute also use this workbook to occasionally offer in-person aging in place workshops. Please contact either of these organizations to find out when they are planning to host their next workshop. You are welcome to download and print your own copy of the workbook at no cost. If you prefer a professionally printed and bound copy, these can be purchased at Blacksburg Books at 401 South Main Street, Suite 106, for a small fee to cover the cost of printing.
We invite you to use the Aging in Place Workbook to help get you started on your aging in place journey, but we also want to hear from you! When you think about your later years, what do you most want? What are your concerns? What are your ideas for making Blacksburg a more aging-in-place friendly community?
