Overview
Like many police departments, the Blacksburg Police Department (BPD) plans to have its officers begin using body-worn cameras. These cameras are intended to enhance transparency and accountability, accurately record law enforcement actions, capture evidence pursuant to investigations, and ensure that the department continues to provide a high level of service to the community.
Community Comment and Review
The BPD expects the body cameras to be delivered in May 2023 and, after training, for them to go into use later in the year. Before using the body-worn camera system, the Blacksburg Police Department is asking for citizen comments on its draft policy for the use of body-worn cameras, as required by Code of Virginia § 15.2-1723.1.
